Coaching Curriculum

Rutland Little League is committed to the core development of our youth baseball players as well as providing a safe and fun environment for these youngsters to partake in America's favorite pastime. To that end, it is imperative that our managers and coaches not only be knowledgeable about baseball and the rules and policies governing our Little League and Babe Ruth (Cal Ripken) programs, but also educated on the very best youth coaching philosophies and principles. We want every one of our players leaving the ball field winners—no matter what the scoreboard says. Our young players look up to you for guidance. Teaching team work, good sportsmanship, a first-rate work ethic and a love of baseball are top priorities of Rutland Little League's mission.

On an annual basis, Rutland Little League requires that all team managers and coaches either attend the free local coaching workshop that the league hosts each year or complete one of a number of recommended online courses prior to their first practice. Although these online courses are not free, most are very affordable, and they do offer top-notch coaching instruction in the convenience of your own home at time that works best for you. For those of you who cannot attend our in-house coaching workshop, the completion of one of these courses will fulfill your coaching-education requirement.

Rutland Little League has partnered with American Sport Education Program (ASEP) to bring you a series of online courses to make the fulfillment of this requirement more convenient. To purchase one of the ASEP courses earmarked by Rutland Little League—Coaching Orientation (sport neutral), Coaching Youth Baseball or Coaching Baseball Technical and Tactical Skills—visit the league’s own training page at http://www.asep.com/asep_content/org/RLL.cfm.

• For those of you who manage and coach at the Babe Ruth level, we recommend you take one of the Babe Ruth League/Cal Ripken Baseball (BRL/RBI) coaching certification courses—Coaching Youth Baseball or Coaching Advanced Baseball—as this certification is required if you plan to manage/coach a Babe Ruth all-star team. As the exclusive coaching-education provider to BRL/RBI, ASEP designed these customized online courses specifically for these programs, however, the courses are available only through a dedicated BRL and RBI website—www.BabeRuthCoaching.org.

Once you finish an online course, be sure to print out a copy of your certificate and forward it to Rutland Little League Coaching Coordinator Scott Gilroy at ou812sjg@charter.net as proof of completion.

Safety First

As safety is also top priority, Little League mandates that team managers participate in a first-aid clinic annually. Rutland offers a free local clinic each year. If you missed this year's local clinic, or if you are seeking a more advanced course, we will accept completion of the ASEP online course "Sport First Aid-4th Edition" in its place. Visit http://www.asep.com/asep_content/org/RLL.cfm to purchase this course. Anyone with a medical background (doctors, nurses, EMT workers, etc.) or anyone who holds a current certificate in first-aid and CPR is exempt from this requirement as long as you can provide the league with proof of your certification; all others are expected to comply.

In addition, all managers/coaches are required to read and abide by the League's Safety Plan. District 4, of which Rutland Little League is a member, takes great pride in its 100 percent compliance with safety standards.

Please direct questions about continuing education for coaches to Rutland Little League Coaching Coordinator Scott Gilroy at ou812sjg@charter.net And thank you for your commitment to Rutland Little League and its mission to provide our ball players with top-notch instruction and a safe, fun and memorable experience at each and every level.

Safety Awareness Program

Rutland Little League takes the safety of our players, coaches, parents and guests seriously. With that in mind, the safety officer coordinates all safety activities including supervision of ASAP (A Safety Awareness Program), ensures safety in player training, ensures safe playing conditions, coordinates reporting and prevention of injuries, solicits suggestions for making conditions safer, and reports suggestions to Little League International through the ASAP system.

We require all coaches and encourage all parents to familiarize themselves with Rutland Little League's safety plan, which is reviewed and updated each season:
